Energy Focus – Latest Issue
The New Year brings… well, the same as the last, much hope, positivity, and potential. Hydrogen is here, renewables are the backbone, and the desire for cleaner and more sustainable energy systems comes not only because it is the right thing to do but also because it is now possible to yield significant financial results. This is important as many business cases for new technologies and new concepts have not fallen into place the way they should have (CCUS is the perfect example).
In America, despite the confusion and back-and-forth in government, wind energy is a growing market. Empire Wind was given the go ahead (finally) and will help to transform the northeast energy system. In the meantime, work is underway with the Revolution Wind offshore windfarm, the first commercial scale project in the region, which will supply 704MW to Rhode Island and Connecticut. An Orsted project, the hope here is to highlight exactly what is possible in terms of localisation, job creation, and energy production from green resources before further developments begin.
In the UK, major efforts to decarbonise continue at pace. Leading ship repair and marine infrastructure business, A&P Group is working hard at its Falmouth facility to build new shore power connections for vessels to charge and for green electricity to supply the busy site instead of fossil fuels. At HydroVolve in Aberdeen, new innovations are being developed and deployed regularly to ensure that when drilling for oil and gas, or geothermal wells, efficiency is the absolute highest priority for operators. Stronger, more effective, and faster drill head technology is making the process more sustainable.
At Cargo Handling Corporation in Mauritius, the business responsible for port operations, driving the economy of the island nation through import and export activity, is busy investigating how its future can be more sustainable. Battery equipment, low-emission vehicles, and eco-conscious strategies are all ready to be rolled out, as soon as the government confirms the longer-term roadmap.
Our cover story comes from J&S Subsea, a relatively young business in the subsea engineering space. Created after a management buyout in 2020, J&S is now a global leader in subsea technology, extending the life of assets through repurposing and revitalisation. Fiercely committed to the net zero mission, this is a company that perfectly demonstrates the new normal – success in legacy oil and gas but long-term booming in the low emission energy space.
